In 1999, Residency Program Director Sharon Dynak's brother David Dynak was chair of the Theatre Department at the University of Utah.  He had been working with the Sundance Institute's Theatre Lab in Sundance, Utah, and suggested a collaboration between Ucross and Sundance playwrights.  That spring, Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Sundance Theatre Program, visited Ucross and a partnership was born.  In 2000, we began dedicating the first three weeks of February to the Sundance Playwrights Retreat at Ucross, which includes 5 playwrights, 1 composer and 1 dramaturg.  Since then Ucross has hosted 56 playwrights and composers, including Doug Wright, who worked on his play I Am My Own Wife, which later won the Pulitzer Prize; Adam Guettel, who was the first Resident to work in Jesse's Hideout, our first composer's studio, where he wrote some of The Light in the Piazza, a Tony Award winner; and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights Paula Vogel and Nilo Cruz.  (For complete list, click here.)
